The Allure of Texas High School Football
By Joseph Kenny

Even if you’ve never been to a Texas high school football game, you probably know that these games and the fans who follow them are somewhat different than other high school football games and fans. In Texas, football isn’t a sport and it isn’t an extra-curricular activity. No, it’s almost been elevated to the level of a religion. To say that Texas high school football fans are passionate about the spot would be an understatement; a huge understatement.

Friday Night Lights may have been first a popular book and then a film but it all started with the true story of one season with the Odessa Permian Panthers. Hollywood didn’t need to pump up the real life story of this Texas high school team with fabrication; the real story was already enough of a legend to carry it all the way to the silver screen.

If you think you know high school football, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen it from the Lone Star State. Even the smaller schools really get involved. It’s not uncommon to see entire caravans traveling the Texas highways on Friday nights; the football team, drill team, cheerleaders, marching band and sponsor. All of that can easily require a dozen buses or so. And that’s not even including the hordes of parents and fans that travel right along with them. In relatively few other events will you see devoted fans travel hundreds of miles for a playoff game; and keep in mind that in Texas that’s entirely possible. The border from east to west stretches almost one thousand miles.

So, what is it exactly about Texas high school football in particular that seems to appeal to such a mass audience? While there may be no definitive answer for that question, there is definitely one certainty: nothing else on earth has quite the same intensity and passion to it. You can feel it reverberating in the air when you step into any high school football stadium throughout the state.

High school football fans in Texas are not just passionate about football; they live it and breathe it. On any given Friday night during football season in Texas you’re likely to see just about as much violence in the stands as you are on the turf if one fan happens to aggravate another.

And that’s not even mentioning the rivalry that can take place between teams in Texas. While it’s not uncommon at all for neighboring towns throughout the country to form high school football rivalries, Texans take it to a whole new level. In many cases, extra policeman have to be called out during big rival games just to keep the peace among the crowd. In a few instances, some towns had to stop even playing one another at all because of the violence that ensued between fans in the stands and on the sidelines during rival games.

The exact allure of Texas high school football may be somewhat difficult to describe, but one thing is certain: you feel it when you experience it.

If the rest of the world loves soccer, Texans love football.

Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker – What Models Are The Most Popular?

Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker – What Models Are The Most Popular? by Hahn Baker

The Weber Smokey mountain range consists of a series of bullet smokers that smoke your food with the use of either charcoal or wood, the smokers are ideal for cooking an abundance of smoked foods such as spare ribs, beef brisket and joints of beef or lamb.

Currently there are three smokers that are still available today however the oldest model is the Weber 2820, the 2820 has now been replaced with a new model that has a number of subtle improvements built into its design.

Many people still own and enjoy using their Weber 2820 however successor is known as the Weber 721001, at first glance the smokers appear virtually the same however additional air vents have been added to the new model so that you can regulate its temperature more easily. The door for the smoker has also been redesigned and is slightly larger than the one found on the previous model making it much easier to add fuel.

Another useful addition to the smokers design is its thermometer and this is situated in the center of its lid, the previous smoker didn’t have a thermometer so you had to keep a close eye on the cooking time to determine when your food was ready.

An ash catch pan has also been fitted to the new smoker which is situated at the bottom, while the catch pan is far from revolutionary it does make the job of cleaning up after you have finished easier than before.

There is one other smoker in the series known as the 731001 and this has the largest capacity of all of the three smokers, the large smoker obviously allows you to smoke a lot more at once and by doing this you make a significant saving when it comes to your wood and charcoal.

For most people the size of 721001 is sufficient as it has the capacity to accommodate a whole turkey and more, the great thing about smoked food is that it often tastes better after it has been frozen so if you do manage to have any leftovers you can put them into storage.

The 731001 has all of the enhancements found on the 721001 so it is capable of smoking your food in exactly the same fashion, both smokers include a water bowl and you can fill this with cider or wine if you want to vary the resulting taste of your food.

Both chicken and turkey come out particularly well when cooked in the smoker often turning out juicy and flavorsome on the inside, if you want to add a special touch to your meal at Christmas or Thanksgiving try smoking your turkey and you're unlikely to be disappointed with the results.

Weber Smokey Mountain Cookers come in a number of shapes and sizes and enable you to make restaurant grade food at home, for more information on specific hardware as well as details on its availability check out these Weber Smokey Mountain reviews.

Snowbirds, Are You Ready For a Road Trip?

Snowbirds, Are You Ready For a Road Trip?
By Jeff Solomon

Every autumn, thousands of lucky people from the mid west to the northern states, get ready to make their annual migration to southern climes. Florida, Arizona, Texas are but a few of the states awaiting the economic benefits of these warm weather nomads.

Unfortunately, the economic down turn has taken it's toll, limiting the numbers of people able to afford to spend the winter in a warmer climate. The weakness in the U.S dollar has also served to limit international travel to countries south of the USA, not to mention the violence occurring daily in Mexico, which traditionally receives a large percentage of American travel dollars.

Economic and social factors make staying here in the USA and becoming more efficient with our travel dollars, the only viable option for anyone but the wealthy.

Driving cross country or even interstate will save you a lot of money. The benefits include,

- No airline expense, which encompasses transportation to and from the airport as well as the tickets.
- No need to rent a vehicle when you get to your destination.
- Control over transportation, where and when you go somewhere as opposed to airline schedules, and how much luggage you bring with you.

There are a few things you need to take care of to ensure a trouble free road trip.

- Make sure your auto and health insurance is up to date and will cover any problems you should encounter on your trip
- Have your car properly serviced before you leave, don't wait until there is a problem, be proactive.
- Since you will probably be staying in a motel or hotel along the way, a travel sheet is a great item to ensure cleanliness and save a few bucks on the cost of the room by choosing the less expensive place to stay.
- Plan your route well, take advantage of internet sites for routes, travel advisories, hotel recommendations, gas prices, and food.

Travel by car can save thousands of dollars, with a little planning a a little extra time, your road trip can be enjoyable as well as economical.

Home Windmill, Solar Energy System or Magnet Generator – How To Decide Which Is Best For You

Home Windmill, Solar Energy System or Magnet Generator – How To Decide Which Is Best For You by James K Stewart

There are literally thousands of topics on the internet today covering the vast subject of renewable home energy technologies. This is fuelled mostly by the current energy crisis that is affecting countries across the world and we are all actively encouraged to explore new ways to provide home energy. So, how do we decide which is best for us?

There is a vast amount of information out there based on installing a solar energy system or a home windmill and even information on building a magnetic generator. This is in many ways very justified as all 3 are all viable and long term renewable energy sources for homes, which are readily available to everyone.

However, much of the information can be confusing and often misleading which just adds to the problem when you are already unsure about what option to explore further, so how do you decide what is best for you. How do you know what to choose and what to avoid and where do you start with the whole process?

Firstly, you need to weigh up the pros and cons of each of the 3 best options. I cannot decide these for you as it will all depend on the type of property you live in and location, size of property and current electrical consumption can all be big influencing factors. That said, there are still certain questions which you need to ask yourself no matter what:

1. How much electricity do I use at the moment?

2. How big is my property?

3. Do I want to go completely off grid?

4. Do I want solar roof panels on my property / do I want a home windmill in my back garden?

5. Do I want the cheapest option or am I prepared to invest a few dollars extra?

Question 1, 2 and 3 are important to know because if you can accurately gauge current electrical consumption, then you will know how big to build your energy generating unit. Also do you want to go completely off grid or simply supplement your existing supply to help save a few dollars?

Question 4 is also important as some people are put off by having a home windmill in their back garden as they feel it may not be very pleasant to look at. The same may sometimes be said for solar roof panels.

Question 5 is one of the most common influencing factors when seeking renewable home energy sources. Many people believe that any one of these 3 options are likely to be highly expensive and out of reach of the average home owner, but this is simply not the case. Much depends on which one you choose and how big you intend to build but for example, did you know that can actually build your own home windmill for less than $120!

These questions are just for starters and depending on your own individual needs, there will be other factors which influence your decision. I would highly recommend you carry out further research on these great home energy generating options so that you can see exactly what is involved, how much it will cost and how to get started.

Making your own home windmill, solar energy system or magnet generator, can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience and there has never been a better time to start. You could save hundreds off your electric bills and let’s not also forget the great benefits clean energy has on the environment you live in!

If you decide to build your own Solar Wind Power, you will have a satisfying and rewarding experience provided you follow instructions which have been written by the experts.

The Affects of Frost on your Vegetables and Plants

The Affects of Frost on your Vegetables and Plants by Bruce A Tucker

Frost forms as a result of the surface of some object being chilled below the dew point of the surrounding air. The dew point is the temperature at which air must be cooled in order to be condensed into water. When the chill point is met crystals form on the surface of the object and appear as ice.

The most common form of frost on vegetation is Hoar Frost also known as Radiation Frost. This occurs when ice crystals form overnight due to drops in temperature and heat loss because objects become colder than the surrounding air.

Many plants can be damaged by the affects of frost and some, such as tomatoes, will die. To know which plants will survive a cold night, refer to the back of the package of seeds that you bought as they have excellent instructions as to temperature ratings.

If you bought your plants already grown from a nursery or garden center then it is best to check with someone there so you do not plant them too early. However in a moment I will talk about protecting your plants in the event an unseasonable frost should occur.

The United States Department of Agriculture has an excellent map on first and final frost dates for various regions of the U.S. They have broken the country down into zones. Find your zone and you will be able to calculate when you should start planting your vegetables.

Even with the best calculations sometimes Mother Nature just doesn’t cooperate. As was the case in May of 2009 when three weeks into the month frost conditions occurred in the southern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania regions.

Until there is a consistent level in temperatures you should monitor the overnight conditions in your area which can be easily done by watching your local weather or the weather channel. If you have planted your vegetables and they call for a potential of frost, you can and must take precautions to ensure that they, your vegetables make it through the night.

The best method for protection from frost conditions is the use of plastic milk containers. What you want to do is cut the top of the container off, but not too much so the plant won’t fit, and cover the plants with them. This creates a greenhouse warming affect for your plants. The container traps air which stays a constant temperature, never allowing it to drop below the dew point and create frost for the surrounding plant.

When morning comes and the cool temperatures have subsided for the day, remove the plastic milk containers and let them soak in the sun and air. They should be fine.

For gardeners, frost can be a devastating condition and literally wipe out any growth we might have. But there are remedies, actions and preventions we can implement that will increase our chances of success through frost weather conditions.

It is a practical easy to follow book that teaches gardeners everything from composting techniques, aeration and frost conditions, to choosing the right tools and picking the right seeds. Rifle Hunting or Bow: Choosing The Right Hunting Method

Rifle Hunting or Bow: Choosing The Right Hunting Method by Ben Anton

Although hunting is enjoyed by millions of people every year, they don't all define hunting the same way. There are several drastically different ways that the sport can be experienced. To make sure that you get the most out of your experience, it's important to learn about the different hunting options, so that you can choose the method that you'll enjoy the most.

Rifle Hunting

For rifle hunting, you need little more than a rifle, ammunition, a hunting knife for cleaning, the appropriate attire for the terrain, and any general camping or hiking gear. Additionally, many consider rifle hunting to be slightly easier than using a bow, simply because it is easier to load a rifle and make a kill with a bullet than it is with a bow. Larger rifles are used to bring down larger game, like elk and bear.

Bow Hunting

Bow hunting is the preferred hunting type for those who wish to get more in touch with the primal nature of the sport. As it is quieter than rifle hunting, bow hunting often allows opportunities to bag several animals, since others aren't spooked when you fire. However, since bows generally can't produce the same type of power as rifles, aim and accuracy are much more important. Bow hunters generally carry their bow, a hunting knife, extra arrows and arrowheads, extra bowstrings in case of breakage or other string damage, and a rangefinder. They typically aim for only large game, as it is very difficult to bring down smaller animals with a bow.

Using Decoys

Decoys are typically used for hunting waterfowl, although large game decoys do exist. Generally used in conjunction with fowl-enticing calls or scents, decoys are placed in the sight of hunters who are camouflaged within a hide or a blind. Decoys often reduce the skill level needed for a successful hunt, as they often bring game to the hunter. Decoys also increase the chances of having a successful hunt, which is especially important if you are hunting for meat instead of trophies.

Tracking

Regardless of their weapon, many hunters choose to track their game instead of simply waiting for the game to come to them. Bow hunters are more likely to track than rifle hunters, mainly because a bow is quieter and less likely to spook game if the hunter misses. Tracking requires skill in the form of being able to identify animal tracks, scat, and other signs that your desired game has been in the area recently. A skilled tracker can almost guarantee contact with the game that they are hunting. Hunting gear for trackers tends to be sparse and lightweight, since they have to carry everything with them as they go.

Blinds and Hides

The use of blinds, hides, lodges, and similar hiding spots is more common than tracking because it requires little more than patience in order to have a successful hunt. Blinds and hides are set up in areas where the desired game is common, and then the hunters simply wait in their hiding spot for their targets to arrive. Abundant hunting gear can be stored in the blind. The main drawbacks to using a blind or a lodge are that they require time to set up, and there is no guarantee that the desired game will make an appearance.

How to Prepare for a Hurricane

How to Prepare for a Hurricane by Ellen Bell

When natural disasters strike, there is usually little to no warning. However, in the case of hurricanes, we are fortunate with today's technology to be able to predict when and where they will hit, as well as a host of other important factors like wind speed, rainfall, etc. While this doesn't offer much comfort to those in their path, it does help costal homeowners by giving them some time to prepare for the oncoming storm, and thus limit their losses as much as possible. With some advance planning and action on your part, you may be able to preserve some of your valuable possessions in the event a hurricane does hit in your area.

One of the most effective ways to protect your home from a hurricane is to cover all the openings. Doors and windows, including garage doors, should be completely covered using boards or plywood. Planning ahead is critical in saving time and money. Know the sizes of all your doors and windows, and have wood pre-cut and stored for quick application, when needed. If you don't have room to store window coverings, consider installing functional hurricane shutters for easily accessible protection.

It's also very important to evaluate your outdoor living spaces before a hurricane hits. Make sure that all furniture and equipment is moved to a secure place. Remove any items that could be picked up by the wind and turned into projectiles. You also may want to consider removing your mailbox from its post and bringing in any landscaping lights. While you're outside, take some time to also inspect your trees and shrubs. If there are any large limbs hanging over your home, it's better to remove them now than risk them falling in hurricane force winds.

Inside your home, you'll want to move furniture and breakables to interior rooms, preferably those without windows, if possible. If your home is in a low lying area, and ground flooding is a concern, try to put your furniture up on cinder blocks, if possible. As a last resort, extremely precious items can be transported to another location. If you do have the ability to move some items, be sure to also take important documents and any family heirlooms that are irreplaceable.

Before a hurricane hits, ensure that your vehicles are filled with gas and in good working order. Remember that if a mass evacuation is ordered, commodities like gasoline and windshield washing fluid could become scarce. If you do have to leave your home, make sure you take all insurance information with you, including your agent's phone number, claims reporting number, and your policy numbers. Advise your friends, neighbors, and family of your evacuation plans, making sure that they all know how to get ahold of you, if necessary.

With these steps and some good common sense, you will be very well prepared for the potential of a hurricane. For more information, visit government agency websites for specific instructions in the event of a storm. While no one ever wants a hurricane to reach their home, it is still a good idea to err on the side of caution and make sure you've prepared yourself in advance. At the very least, you'll have the peace of mind of knowing that you've limited your losses as much as possible and assured the safety of your loved ones.

Family Camping

Family Camping by Brian Tecklenburg

Going camping with your kids can be an awesome adventure. Teaching children about the wilderness when they are young can be really rewarding. With all of today's distractions (iPods, Facebook, Twitter, cell phones) it can be hard to spend good old-fashioned quality time with your kids. Going camping can be a great way to get away from all that and get in some some family bonding. But why else would families go camping? Why take the kids on an adventure? Here is a list of reasons to start them young:

Teach them the value of adventure. The last thing you want is to wish you had shown your kids the world, and how beautiful it really is. Taking the kids camping can teach them how to enjoy the outdoors, and how to love nature.

Get them out in the wild. Almost as bad as not showing your children the world, is letting your children become total hermits who don't do any physical activity. Teaching your kids to get outside and have fun in the outdoors ensures they will have active and healthy lifestyles. Since physical activity is extremely important for our health, and what better way to teach your children than to let them go play in the beauty of nature?

Eliminate the wimp factor. You never want to hear that your kids are afraid to try new things, that they're stuck in their ways, or just don't want to try. One positive message that camping teaches children is yes you can. It helps them develop self esteem and be more willing to try things out. This lesson is absolutely necessary for well balanced children.

It's fun. It is totally fun. You will enjoy every minute of it with your kids. They are free to play as much as they want, after all there are no expensive paintings or electronics to break, and endless learning and fun.

aside from just why, is how. How exactly should one attempt to take children camping? Here are a few tips and tricks from the pros:

Have a tent. A good tent can make all the difference in the world. A good tent can keep you comfortable and make your kids feel safe.

Pack the right clothes. Bringing the right clothing along can help you stay comfortable and warm in any situation. Children have a hard time dealing when they are improperly fittted for the conditions.

Be ready with snacks. Remember that kids don't always have great ability to control their eating schedule. When they play more, they need to eat more, make sure you have enough. Nothing makes grumpier kids than making them hungry and not giving them snacks.

Start the fire before dark. starting the fire during daylight hours can save loads of trouble. Nothing helps keep the family happy and together than sitting around the campfire. In addition, the fire will be a great place to tell fun stories and impart parental wisdom on the children.

Include your kids in everything. They will love helping you hunt for firewood, set up the tent, or purify water. Remember to them this is all a new and exciting process.

Play some games. Lots of regular games are much more exciting in the wilderness. Take hide and go seek for example. With millions of hiding places, and and endless playing field, this game becomes much more fun.

Don't forget your boots. Wearing a comfortable pair of hiking boots can be a good idea even if you don't plan on hiking. They help keep your ankles supported and protect you from underbrush.

Find out the type and the fertility characteristics of the soil. Inherent fertility is determined both by the physical and chemical properties in the composition of the soil. Color and depth of soil, texture and drainage, structural stability and consistence are the physical aspects of the soil to look for. Then, soil reaction, organic matter, nutrient status and cation exchange capacity are the chemistry side of the soil.

Next, find out how much light there is throughout the day. Sunlight is an essential ingredient for a plant to grow and all plants need sunlight to convert nutrients to be taken up and absorb for healthy growth.

Water is essential for the creation of sap and turgidity of the plant.

Generally good garden soils contain a mix of sand, silt and clay. They can also contain gravel and humus. To have healthy plants a right balance of these substances are required. The addition of a balanced fertilizer will ensure your plants have all the nutrients essential for growth, formation of flower buds and fruit.

With all this information under your belt, you can start to prepare the soil. Examine the soil structure defined by the way particles cling together. A stable structure will not break down easily when cultivated.

Check the way the soil behaves under wet and dry conditions which is the consistency of the soil. If it tends to get too sticky when wet, and hard when dry, these are difficult to cultivate. Their capacity to retain moisture is low, and dries out fast. These soils can be improved with the addition of humus or good organic matter to make it more friable.

If the soil is friable and breaks up easily when dry and non sticky when wet is the best consistency to work with.

Soil reaction expressed in pH values is another contributing factor, as different plants require a different pH value or acid level. A neutral soil has a pH7 value. Below this level signifies an increasing level of acidity and over a pH7 an increasing level of alkalinity.

In areas where there is higher rainfall the more soil acidity and areas with lower rainfall have more alkaline soils. Acid soils can be neutralized with the addition of lime and alkaline soils with sulfur.

Remove excessively large stones and large gravel. Mix in good compost, manure, and correct soil structure. The more clay in a soil the higher the cation exchange capacity of the soil, and the higher the cation exchange capacity, the more effective it is in handling fertilizer exchange.

Design your layout and decide what you want and find out whether it is suitable or not.

Buy strong and healthy plants. Look for discoloration, insect attack and disease. You donĂ¢€™t want to start your garden with these. Now it is time to start planting and put them in the ground or container. With proper maintenance, and the elements of nutrition, water and sunlight your garden will have the desired results.
